The famous personality of the Ammadhyarathri ceremony is Lord Shiva. The events that lead to the celebration of this festival are mentioned in Puranas and Agamas. After the occurrence of many calamities, one day people en masse prayed to Shiva Deva, celebrating his birthday and seeking salvation and prosperity. Shiva wanted to find ways through which he can be pleased by all creatures and thus permit them their happiness. He came to know from his consort Parvati that the way to realize this was to bathe in the Ganges, the holiest river in the world which was present on earth from ancient times. When Shiva arrived at Ganga, he was unable to bathe because a demon called Andhakasura blocked his way and tried to thwart Shiva's attempt. Shiva killed him with a single arrow shot. As a result, Ganga appeared in her original source form and without being polluted by blood of a demon. This is why Lord Shiva has always been remembered on the day of Ammadhyra-krithika. The night preceding Ammadhyarathi is called Maha Saptami. On Maha Saptami, Lord Vishnu used to take the form of Narasimhan to bathe in the holy river. After he bathed, he would take his chariot named Pushpaka Vimana and return to Vaikuntha. This day has been celebrated as the birth day of Lord Vishnu since time immemorial. As per Tamil tradition, this day is very dear to the Tamils as on this day Kubera appears with his wealth in his chariot named Pushpaka Vimana. On this occasion, Vaikunta Ekadasi is observed during which ketaki thiruvizha is performed to honor all the departed souls whose souls are considered sacred by the Hindus. The ketaki flowers are offered to the ancestors and a paralu (steaming bowl) is placed in front of them for all to see. Since Ammadhyaratiyam is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Shiva, special importance is attached to this day because it is considered as a propitious day for all Hindus. It is believed that the worship of Lord Shiva on this day will help destroy all evil forces from their lives. In order to appease Lord Shiva, people throughout the world celebrate this festival. In Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh it is customary that people clean their houses and offer prayers before the commencement on the ceremony. In North India, people worship Lord Shiva on this occasion with sacred music and dance. Thousands of people come to the temple to perform the special pooja and get blessings of the Lord. In Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra it is traditional that everyone wears new clothes on this day in order to make sure that what they wear or carry is pure. In some places it is customary to offer a small coin or a sweet in a jar as a gift in front of a Lord Ganesha idol during the celebrations in front of the temple. In Tamil Nadu, people observe Thrissur Pooram by participating in dance competitions on this day. cfa1e77820
